Edmundston, January 28, 2014 – Following the final round of the Aviva Community Fund competition, the Refuge Madawaska Shelter receives a lump sum of $5,000. The jury’s decision was announced this morning during CTV’s Canada AM morning show.
The Refuge Madawaska Shelter qualified for the final round in December 2013 after receiving tremendous support from people all around the country by getting 13000 votes during the semi-finals. The Refuge Madawaska Shelter was in the “Large budget” category in order to win $100,000 to $150,000, an amount that would have allowed to quickly complete the construction budget for their permanent facility.
The chair of the Board of Directors of the Refuge Madawaska Shelter, Christine Landry, has taken the results with philosophy: “Even though we are sad that we did not receive additional funding from Aviva, we are proud of what we achieved last fall. The whole population stood together for our cause. We were able to go beyond awareness to the people about the need to build this shelter. We will roll up our sleeves and double our efforts in order to finance the construction of our building and continue our mission to give a second chance to our animals.”
“I wish to thank all the volunteers, the population, the businesses and our media partners who supported us during all the rounds,” said Christine Landry. “Support demonstrated last fall motivates us to continue our work.”
Mrs. Landry confirms that construction of its building will proceed in 2014 on the Madawaska Maliseet First Nation’s parcel of donated land. “With 31 adoptions so far this January, it demonstrates that there is an urgent need in our region. We are confident that we will be able to raise the funds needed to build our facility.”
Fund raising activities to come
The chief of the Madawaksa Maliseet First Nation, Patrica Bernard, has committed to raising $100,000 to help with construction.
The remaining $250,000 needed for the construction will be raised by the Refuge Madawaska Shelter by using popular initiatives. Starting this weekend, we will begin an auction on our Facebook page. We will also be knocking on government doors. Other initiatives will be announced shortly.

The next activity will take place this Saturday, February 1. People are invited to come have their pets picture taken in a Valentines decor for only 5$ at the Edmundston Pet Valu.
