Q. Are the animals in good health?
A. Yes – every animal at the Madawaska Shelter is examined by a veterinarian and given medical attention if needed. The animals are also vaccinated and spayed or neutered prior to adoption.

Q. I would like to meet an animal. How should I proceed?
A. You must first complete the pre-adoption form and send it to us. Once your application is approved, we will contact you to discuss a location where you could meet the animal.

Q. Why do I have to fill out a pre-adoption form?
A. For several reasons. First, the form allows us to see if the animal is the best choice for you. For instance, if you are frequently gone for longs periods of time and that the dog you want is very anxious when alone, it is likely that we will recommend another dog that will suit your lifestyle better. The pre-adoption form also allows us to understand the reasons for your interest of our animals and your experience with animals. Finally, the form allows us to have some control over the risk of abandonment of the animal in question (if the animal is unsuitable for a particular lifestyle).

Q. Why do you require a transfer / adoption fee?
A. The transfer fee helps us take care of your pet (food and items such as bowls, collars, leashes, toys, etc.) until a permanent home is found. The cost is less than the cost of euthanasia, and it allows your pet to have a second chance. As for the adoption fee, it is the same principle. We sometimes get animals that are in poor health, have bad behavior, are pregnant or just had babies and these animals require much more care and attention. We give them the medical help they need, in addition to vaccinate and spay or neuter them. We make sure that the animals are in good health before the adoption. All the treatments and the care needed are very expensive, and the adoption fee helps cover the cost incurred.
