The Refuge Madawaska Shelter Inc. will accept the surrender cats, dogs or any other domestic animal by appointment only. Availability for intake is dependent upon space. The animal must be in your care for two weeks for you to be considered an owner / guardian. Filing out this form as honestly and completely as you can will help us determine the best type of home for your pet. Submit this form as well as veterinary records and a recent picture to the contact information below. Please note: All pictures should be emailed or mailed, not faxed. Once received, we will contact you to let you know if a behaviour and medical evaluation will be scheduled.
An appointment for evaluation does not guarantee that the Refuge Madawaska Shelter Inc. will accept your pet.

What happens when your pet is accepted at the shelter?
One of our representatives will evaluate the behaviour of your pet. We will schedule an appointment with a veterinarian to assess the health of your pet. He or she will be up to date of the vaccination (if not up to date) and if not spayed of neutered, the procedure will be done before being adopted. For everyone’s safety, all cats must be in a carrier. Small domestic animals in a carrier or cage, and all dogs must be leashed or in a carrier. The surrender fee will be collected if your pet is accepted into our adoption program. Once your pet has been evaluated and the Refuge Madawaska Shelter decides to accept your pet, a surrender fee per pet will be collected. Accepted forms of payment are cash or cheques. The surrender fees are the following:
- Dog: $50
- Cat: $25
- Female cat and its kittens: $50
- Small domestic animal: $10
- Please contact us regarding litter intakes
Don’t forget to bring with you:

- Special food or treats that your pet needs
- Your pet’s bed, toys, leash and other belongings from home
- Your pet’s crate or carrier
- Medical record for your pet
- Anything else you think can help your pet with the transaction
